How To Make Pho Spicy?


  • 1 package of pho noodles
  • 1 lb of beef, thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 inch of ginger, sliced
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tbsp of coriander seeds
  • 1 tbsp of fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp of cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp of chili flakes
  • 4 cups of beef broth
  • 1 tbsp of fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp of soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • Fresh herbs (cilantro, basil, mint)
  • Lime wedges
  • Sliced chili peppers


  1. Toast the star anise, cinnamon sticks, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, and chili flakes in a dry pan over medium heat until fragrant.
  2. In a large pot, add the beef broth, fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar, garlic, ginger, and toasted spices. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, cook the pho noodles according to package instructions and set aside.
  4. Add the thinly sliced beef and onions to the broth and cook for a few minutes until the beef is cooked through.
  5. Divide the cooked noodles among bowls and ladle the hot broth over the top.
  6. Top with fresh herbs, lime wedges, and sliced chili peppers for extra spice.
